Before my first class of this week on Monday, the Japanese teacher of English notified me that one of our students was not going to be in class. She said that his father was in a car accident and was in the hospital. Kyoto-sensei (vice principal in Japan) explained that the accident involved the car leaving the road and entering the sea.
Tuesday morning, the news was not good. Both the JTE and Kyoto-sensei told me that the student’s father had died Monday. He was 51. My student is 14.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon and I was not asked to attend. I had no complaints, as I would have understood very little of any proceedings, the atmosphere would have been very heavy, and while I know the kid, I think there are much better ways for me to be involved with him.
All of us in Higashi hope he’s doing as well as he can.
